Allahabad Prashasti in Bengali
It is known from Ashoka’s inscription that this pillar was erected in the ancient city of Kaushambi, which was about thirty kilometers away from its present location. Seeing the broken part of another pillar at Kaushambi, many think that Allahabad pillar and this broken pillar used to stand side by side in the past. The pillar has been moved several times since the beginning of Muslim rule in the 13th century, and finally moved to Allahabad in 1605 during the reign of Jahangir. This time a sphere is placed at the top of the column. This pillar was designed by Joseph Typhentheller in the mid-eighteenth century. In 1836, Captain Edward Smith tried to place a lion statue on the top of the pillar according to his own design, but Alexander Cunningham thwarted the move.
