List of National Parks in India

National parks are protected by the IUCN for wildlife preservation, which is seen as a key resource to ensure the vitality of ecosystems. The first Indian national park was established in 1936 and is now called Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. In 1970 there were only five national parks in India. In 1972, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act and Project Tiger to safeguard the habitats of conservation-reliant species.
