Varalakshmi Vratham Vidhanam and Katha in Telugu
Varalakshmi Vratam/ Vara Mahalakshmi Vrata is a festival to propitiate the goddess Lakshmi. Varalakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth. It is an important pooja performed by many women in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and northern Sri Lanka. The Hindu festival called Vara MahaLakshmi Vrata is celebrated on the second Friday or the Friday before the day of the full moon – Poornima – in the month of Shravana, which corresponds to the Gregorian months of July–August.
Varamahalakshmi Vrata is performed by women for their own well being and that of all their family members. It is believed that worshipping the Goddess Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalakshmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Wisdom, Love, Fame, Peace, Contentment, and Strength. Due to the rising popularity of this holy day in some states, it is now being declared as an optional official holiday in India.
This pooja is performed for the well-being of family members, especially for the life of the husband and to get children, wealth, etc. Every year Varalakshmi Vratham is observed in Sravana (in Telugu) month (Avani in Tamil & Sawan in Hindi). It is celebrated on Friday preceeding the full moon day (Pournami). Those who cannot perform it on that day, can do it on any other Friday in that month. On this day, married woman should observe fasting till they finish the puja.

Then smear Haldi and Kumkum on the Kalash and place it in the middle of the plate. Add water to the Kalash and put some Akshat into it. Place a whole coconut on the neck of the Kalash. Fix the face of the Mother Goddess to the husk of the coconut. Then use the clothes to drape a saree for the Mother Goddess. Make her hair and accessorise her with jewellery and other beauty items. Put the garland of fresh flowers around the Goddess’ neck. Subsequently, place the mirror behind the deity. Then light the oil lamp. Then place the Sharadu (sacred threads) near the Goddess. After the deity is crafted, offer your prayers to Lord Ganesha. Then chant the sacred Mantras dedicated to Goddess Varalakshmi. You may also play the Mahalakshmi Saharanamam Stotram. Offer the flowers one by one and then the tamboolam (consisting of paan, supari, fruits, coconut, dakshina, flowers, haldi and kumkum). Then offer the Naiveidhyam – Sundal, Kheer, Modak, Idli, Salted Modak etc to the Goddess. Then perform the aarti. And conclude the puja by tying the sacred thread around your right wrist.
